The Brecon to Hay Greenway

Welcome

Welcome to our website! Having become a registered charity in August 2020, the Brecon to Hay Greenway is excited to now have an official platform where supporters can access up-to-date news, events, and background information on the project.

Here you will find a potted history of the Brecon to Hay railway line (which opened in 1864 and closed in 1962), including the world’s oldest non-mining tunnel at Talyllyn. In the news section, there are updates on the project’s progress, from funding to the mini-feasibility study that was carried out by Sustrans in January 2019, and the results of a public survey asking questions such as what the Greenway should be, for whom, and which section of the route should be undertaken first.

Landowners along the proposed route are currently being contacted – their response to the Greenway will be a key stage of the project, in terms of establishing how the land along the route will be acquired for use. We hope to address any questions in relation to this in the landowners’ section of the website.

Fundraising and social events have been curtailed this year by the effects of Covid-19. The committee has continued to meet online, via Zoom, and some of us got together in September, to explore a section of the line on foot (accessible by public right-of-way) between Talgarth and Pontithel; we would like to make this a regular activity, and invite anyone who is interested to join us, when both the weather and coronavirus restrictions permit.

We also hope to create a gallery of photos documenting sections of the old railway line – and any organised events. Please check back for these, and for notices of other developments; you can also follow our Facebook page (@brecontohaygreenway), and subscribe to our newsletter.

If you would like to join the committee, and/or have a particular interest or skill that could help the project, please email info@brecontohay.org or send us a message with the contact form.

Thank you for your support!
